Button wins stunning Canadian GP

Jenson Button wins a chaotic and rain-affected Canadian GP on the last lap from Sebastian Vettel as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso fail to finish.

Vettel's Red Bull ran wide under pressure to gift the win to Button, who recovered after a collision with McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Red Bull's Mark Webber was third to deprive Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher of a podium place.
Vettel now leads the championship by 60 points from Button.
An incident-packed race saw the safety car used five times and  included a two-hour stoppage for heavy rain.

Tyson To Be Inducted In the Hall Of Fame

Mike Tyson, whose legendary tale of punishing power and meteroic rise ended in an epic fall from grace, will be among the legends inducted Sunday into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Tyson, three weeks shy of his 45th birthday, became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history in 1986 at age 20 and finished with a record of 50-6 with 44 knockouts, personifying at times the best and worst of the sport.
"I am honored," Tyson said. "The sport of boxing has given me so much and it is truly a blessing to be acknowledged alongside other boxing legends because they paved the way for me, as I hope I have inspired others."
Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez, Russian-born Australian Kostya Tszyu, Mexican trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, referee Joe Cortez and Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone, movie boxer "Rocky", were also honored.
But none of them could match the levels Tyson reached as a global sports icon, especially in his younger days after escaping the mean streets of Brooklyn and finding riches by pounding opponents with first-round knockouts.
The downfall of "Iron Mike" began in 1990 at Tokyo when the undisputed champion suffered the first loss of his career, a 10th-round knockout at the hands of James "Buster" Douglas in one of the most shocking upsets in sport.
In 1992, Tyson was convicted of raping a beauty queen at a pageant in Indianapolis, Indiana. He served three years of a six-year sentence before his release in 1995, steadfastly denying he raped the woman.
Tyson reclaimed the heavyweight throne but lost to Evander Holyfield in 1996 and in a 1997 rematch infamously bit Holyfield's ears twice, serving a year's banishment in exile for the move.
Despite substance abuse and serving jail time for assault, Tyson made one final run at boxing supremacy, but in his last world title fight he was knocked out in the eighth round by Britain's Lennox Lewis at Memphis, Tennessee.
Tyson filed for bankruptcy in 2003 and retired after losses to Britain's Danny Williams in 2004 and American Kevin McBride in 2005.
Tyson quit after six rounds in his final fight, finishing his last round sitting on the canvas.
"I don't have the stomach for this," Tyson said. "I don't have that ferocity. I'm not an animal anymore."
Outrageous and controversial remarks were Tyson's stock and trade, but a kinder, gentler Tyson has emerged since then, appearing in "The Hangover" films and in reality television shows exploring his love of training birds.

Awesome Federer ends Djokovic hot streak to set up French Open final against Nadal

Celebrity spotting: Actress Salma Hayek was in the stands to watch Federer's brilliant display

Novak Djokovic's brilliant winning streak met a dramatic, murky end when Roger Federer announced he was far from finished.

At 9.37pm and with an overnight suspension due, the Swiss brought Roland Garros to its feet by becoming the first man to beat Djokovic this year as he inflicted on him a 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 defeat.Federer was the last man to overcome the Serb back in November at the O2 Arena, and now he may have put a stop to his ambitions of becoming world No 1.

If Nadal wins Sunday's final he can retain the position threatened by Djokovic's 41 straight victories, a sequence which is one fewer than John McEnroe's run in 1984.With the start of play ridiculously put back an hour, they looked like gatecrashing women's finals day when Federer, 30 in August, was twice a break down towards the end of the fourth set.

Yet he broke back both times and in the tiebreak, played through badly fading light, pumped down an 18th ace to clinch it 7-5.

Federer has been desperate to show he is not a spent force at a time when he has been shunted out of the top two and the Nadal-Djokovic rivalry is all the rage. It is a powerful motivating force, as his form all fortnight has demonstrated.

Mini Biography

American leading man famed as the star of one of the longest-running shows in U.S. television history, "Gunsmoke" (1955). Born of Norwegian heritage (the family name, Aurness, had formerly been Aursness) in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Rolf and Ruth Duesler Aurness. His father was a <!-- more -->traveling salesman of medical supplies and his mother later became a newspaper columnist. James attended West High School in Minneapolis. Although he appeared in school plays, he had no interest in performing, and dreamed instead of going to sea. After high school, he attended one semester at Beloit College before receiving his draft notice in 1943. He entered the army and trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, before shipping out for North Africa. After landing at Casablanca, Arness joined the 3rd Infantry Division in time for the invasion of Anzio. Ten days after the invasion, Arness was severely wounded in the leg and foot by German machine-gun fire. His wounds, which plagued him the rest of his life, resulted in his medical discharge from the army. While recuperating in a Clinton, Iowa hospital, he was visited by his younger brother Peter (later to gain fame as actor Peter Graves), who suggested he take a radio course at the University of Minnesota. James did so, and a teacher recommended him for a job as an announcer at a Minneapolis radio station. Though seemingly headed for success in radio, he followed a boyhood friend's suggestion and went with the friend to Hollywood in hopes of getting work as film extras. He studied at the Bliss-Hayden Theatre School under actor Harry Hayden, and while appearing in a play there was spotted by agent Leon Lance. Lance got the actor a role as Loretta Young's brother in The Farmer's Daughter (1947). The director of that film, H.C. Potter, recommended that he drop the "u" from his last name and soon thereafter the actor was officially known as James Arness. Little work followed this break, and Arness became something of a beach bum, living on the shore at San Onofre and spending his days surfing. He began taking his acting career more seriously when he began to receive fan mail following the release of the Young picture. He appeared in a production of "Candida" at the Pasadena Community Playhouse, and married his leading lady, Virginia Chapman. She pressed him to study acting and to work harder in pursuit of a career, but Arness has been consistent in ascribing his success to luck. He began to get small roles with frequency, often, due to his size, villainous characters. Most notable among these was that of the space alien in The Thing from Another World (1951). While playing a Greek warrior in a play, Arness was spotted by agent Charles K. Feldman, who represented John Wayne. Feldman introduced Arness to Wayne, who put the self-described 6' 6" actor under personal contract. Arness played several roles over the next few years for and with Wayne, whom he considered a mentor. In 1955, Wayne recommended Arness for the lead role of Matt Dillon in the TV series "Gunsmoke" (1955). (Contrary to urban legend, Wayne himself was never offered the role.) Arness at first declined, thinking a TV series could derail his growing film career, but Wayne argued for the show, and Arness accepted. His portrayal of stalwart marshal Dillon became an iconic figure in American television and the series, on the air for twenty seasons, is, as of 2008, the longest-running dramatic series in U.S. television history. Arness became world-famous and years later reprised the character in a series of TV movies. After the surprising cancellation of "Gunsmoke" in 1975, Arness jumped immediately into another successful (though much shorter-lived) Western project, a TV-movie-miniseries-series combination known as "How The West Was Won." A brief modern police drama, "McClain's Law" (1981), followed, and Arness played his mentor John Wayne's role in Red River (1988) (TV), a remake of the Wayne classic. Following the aforementioned "Gunsmoke" TV movies (the last in 1994, when Arness was 71), Arness basically retired. His marriage to Virginia Chapman ended in divorce in 1960. They had three children together, one of whom, Jenny Lee, died a suicide in 1975. Arness subsequently married Janet Surtrees in 1978.

Eye-opener: Are Mavs now in control of NBA Finals?

The thought that it is better to give than receive got to the Miami Heat Thursday night.

First the Heat gave away Game 2 of the NBA Finals. In the process they gave a tremendous amount of joy to all the fans who have loathed this team since "The Decision" and who have been wishing for this type of implosion.

They also gave away home court advantage making it possible that the Mavericks, who got nine points in the final 2:44 from Dirk Nowitzki, can win a title without having to win another road game.

The only thing the Heat received in return is the derision a team gets when it blows a 15-point leave.

"We didn't play the way that we normally play, so they deserved it and we didn't," Dwyane Wade said.

Whether the giving began and ended Thursday or whether the Heat has given away a title that everyone was predicting just 48 hours before will be proven out Sunday in Dallas.

Steve Nash comes clean on gay NBA player issue

It is pertinent to note that the subject of homosexuality took the center stage when the Suns’ CEO “Rick Welts” emerged out of the secret at the start of this month.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- In the end 14-year-old Sukanya Roy of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., with her penchants for writing invisible words on her palm, emerged the victor of the late night showdown at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Her word: cymotrichous, meaning having the hair wavy.

"It's just amazing. It's hard to fine the words," said Sukanya, who has spent the last three days working her way through an impressively complicated set of words with origins from around the globe.

One by one, other Bee hopefuls were ultimately defeated by such polysyllabic tongue-twisters as sciamachy, a word that means fighting with a shadow or imaginary enemy. The Scripps National Spelling Bee hosted 275 spellers this year from across the country and the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Thirteen spellers competed in the finals round Thursday night, live on ESPN, in hopes of winning $30,000 among other prizes.

Federer-Djokovic, Nadal-Murray in French semis

Even Rafael Nadal acknowledges his French Open semifinal against Andy Murray is not nearly as intriguing as the one between unbeaten Novak Djokovic and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.

"It's the best player of today against the best player in history. ... It's going to be a beautiful match," Nadal said. "I would watch it — if I was a spectator."

Sure, there's a lot on the line for the entire quartet of men who'll be playing at Roland Garros on Friday, which one might expect, given that it's only the 12th time in the Open era,

French Open: Sharapova's 10 double-faults help Li

As Maria Sharapova prepared to serve while only a point from defeat in the French Open semifinals, Li Na was thinking what any opponent would at that precise moment.

"I was, like, 'Please, double-fault. That way I can win the match,'" Li explained to the crowd a few moments later.

Sharapova obliged. Her second serve hit the white tape atop the net and bounced back for Sharapova's 10th double-fault of an error-filled afternoon, closing Li's 6-4, 7-5 victory Thursday. The result ended Sharapova's bid to complete a career Grand Slam, and allowed Li to reach a second consecutive major final.

Hughes quits Fulham, denies Villa approach AFP

Birmingham club Villa were left without a manager after former France boss Gerard Houllier stepped down on Wednesday following a heart scare.

Fulham finished eighth, one place above Villa, last season and Hughes was immediately touted as the man to replace Houllier.

However, Hughes insisted Thursday "neither myself nor my representative have approached or have been approached by any other clubs".

Shaquille O'Neal, a dominant center who played on four NBA championship teams, announced Wednesday he was planning to retire after a professional career spanning nearly two decades.

One of the most accomplished players in the game, the 39-year-old O'Neal made the announcement by posting a video on the social media website Twitter.

"We did it. Nineteen years baby. I want to thank you very much, that's why I'm telling you first, I'm about to retire. Thank you, talk to you soon," he said in the message.

The physically imposing O'Neal, who stood 7 feet one inches and weighed 325 pounds, was taken as the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic.

After moving to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996, O'Neal became part of a championship run with the young Kobe Bryant that produced three successive NBA titles from the 1999-2000 season.

O'Neal was named NBA Finals MVP in each of those triumphs and earned the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2000.

In 2004, O'Neal signed on with the Miami Heat and teamed up with Dwyane Wade to win the 2006 NBA championship.

He later played for the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers before spending an injury-marred campaign this season with the Boston Celtics.

O'Neal averaged 23.7 points a game over his long career along with 10.9 rebounds.
