Eto'o fires Inter into Coppa Italia final

FC Internazionale Milano booked their place in the COPPA ITALIA 2011 final for the sixth time in seven seasons after a 1-1 draw with AS Roma earned Leonardo's side a 2-1 aggregate victory at San Siro.
It was always going to be a tall order for the Giallorossi to overcome the six-time winners in Milan, particularly after Samuel Eto'o had doubled the hosts' aggregate lead three minutes into the second half. Yet Marco Borriello's late header gave the visitors a lifeline and made for an exciting last few minutes as Vincenzo Montella's team sought the away goal that would have taken them to the final at their Stadio Olimpico.
Trailing to Dejan Stanković's first-leg goal, Roma made all the running before the break, with Borriello firing over and Daniele De Rossi sending a curling effort narrowly wide. However, it was the Beneamata who broke the second-leg deadlock when Eto'o stroked his 50th Inter goal past Doni.
The holders could have doubled their lead soon afterwards when Giampaolo Pazzini brought a good stop from Doni after controlling a long ball, while Diego Milito was also denied by the Brazilian goalkeeper having cut inside his marker. At the other end, Júlio César also impressed the home crowd with a wonderful reaction save from Borriello, who subsequently fired a shot off both posts.
Had that gone in, Borriello's late header, from Simone Perrotta's cross, would have counted for more than a mere consolation. In the end, though, the night belonged to Eto'o and Javier Zanetti, whose 1,000th competitive appearance ended on a high note, and the chance for the 37-year-old to lift his fourth Coppa Italia on 29 May, when Inter face US Città di Palermo in Rome.

Cristiano Ronaldo now sits on 36 league goals following his fourth hat-trick of the season

In 1989/90, Hugo Sanchez matched Telmo Zarra’s record of 38 league goals in one season; a mark from a different era of football that has yet to be equaled. Twenty-one years later, though, Crisitiano Ronaldo is on the verge of doing just that, and even surpassing it. With his hat-trick against Getafe, the Portuguese international now has 36 on the season with matches against Villarreal and Almeria still to play.

Tuesday’s match got off to a slow start for both sides. Real Madrid were satisfied with creating plays and scoring opportunities, while Cristiano Ronaldo put Getafe’s goal in the center of his crosshairs. Following an extraordinary pass by Ozil on 24’, Ronaldo out-jumped Cata Diaz and connected with a perfect header to send the ball into the back of the net. It was a heavy blow for Getafe, who were unable to advance towards Adan; by far one of the easiest matches of his career as the Azulones ended the first half with zero shots on goal.

The visitors pushed their lines forward after the restart, but to little avail. Real Madrid, meanwhile, sought a strike that would all but seal the win. Then on 58’, Higuain beat Ustari to a ball and the deflection landed at the feet of Ozil, The midfielder passed to Cristiano, who dribbled by Cata Diaz and easily scored the tap-in. The strike sunk Getafe, but only made Madrid hungrier.

Adebayor and Benzema came off the bench on 75’ and the Frenchman needed all but a minute to make it 3-0 in a brilliant show of ball control. Castilla goalkeeper Tomas Mejias then made his first team debut by stepping in for Adan with six minutes left to play.

All that was missing was the icing on the cake. And it came on 91’ when Mane tackled Ronaldo inside the box. CR7 wanted his hat-trick and had little trouble beating Ustari to close out the 4-0 win. That makes 36 goals for Ronaldo, who is the frontrunner for top scorer in La Liga as well as the Golden Boot.

Liverpool put five past Fulham

Maxi Rodríguez scored his second hat-trick in three games as Liverpool FC climbed one place to fifth courtesy of a 5-2 triumph against Fulham FC.
Kenny Dalglish's team were three up inside 16 minutes at Craven Cottage. Maxi's first arrived after just 32 seconds, the Argentina winger following up after Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had prevented Carlos Salcido from scoring an own goal. Glen Johnson set up the second soon after with a deep cross to the far post which Maxi met first time on the volley.
Dirk Kuyt increased the visitors' lead before Moussa Dembélé (57) reduced Fulham's arrears with a measured shot past Pepe Reina. Maxi, however, restored the Reds' three-goal cushion with a thumping strike from 25 metres. The impressive Luis Suárez (75) slipped in number five, with Steve Sidwell's spectacular late effort nothing more than consolation for Mark Hughes' men.

Real Madrid CF have begun to rebuild following their UEFA Champions League elimination by announcing a reported €10m deal with Borussia Dortmund for Turkey midfield player Nuri Şahin.
The 22-year-old will sign a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabéu and is coach José Mourinho's first reinforcement ahead of the 2011/12 campaign. He will become the first Turkish international to represent the Merengues.

The player said: "It was impossible to say no to this club and I look at the move as a jump forward in my career. I would only have left Dortmund for a team capable of winning many titles as is the case with Madrid. This has been a very difficult decision and one I have taken alongside the club – I'm leaving here feeling sad. I got on well with the coach and I like this city and the club but Madrid are one of the best teams in the world."
Nuri rose to prominence in 2005 when, at just 16 years and 335 days, he became the youngest player to appear in the German top flight. He went on to set the mark as the division's youngest scorer, records he also holds with Turkey.
Born in Germany, the holding midfielder subsequently proved the star turn at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship that year as Turkey lifted the title in Italy.
Save for a year on loan at Feyenoord in 2007/08, Nuri has spent his entire career with Dortmund. He scored six goals in 30 games this term before a knee injury sustained in April ruled him out for the season as the club won the Bundesliga for the first time since 2002.

Milan end seven-year title wait

After holding AS Roma to a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico, AC Milan have been crowned champions of Italy for the 18th time.
The Rossoneri required just a point from their trip to the Italian capital in order to establish an unassailable nine-point lead at the top of Serie A and came away with exactly that following a professional performance.
Milan came the closest to scoring when Robinho hit the post with a curling shot in the second half. Zlatan Ibrahimović also had a stinging free-kick well saved by Doni but in the end a point proved sufficient to end Milan's seven-year wait for a title.
Massimiliano Allegri could cap a memorable maiden season in charge by completing the double, although they first have to get past US Città di Palermo in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. The second leg is played in Sicily on 11 May with the tie delicately poised at 2-2.
Tonight's draw took Roma level on points with fourth-placed city rivals S.S. Lazio, who have a tricky visit to Udinese Calcio on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Palermo moved to within three points of Juventus, in seventh, with a 2-1 win against already-relegated AS Bari.

Ronaldo scores four to top Golden Shoe rankings

It was all change at the top of the ESM Golden Shoe rankings this weekend with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring four to go four points clear of the goalless Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo netted four for Real Madrid CF in their 6-2 Liga victory at Sevilla FC, including three second-half goals in quick succession, to take his tally for the season to 33 and climb above Messi, who failed to score in FC Barcelona's 2-0 home win over city rivals RCD Espanyol.

Mario Gomez was also among the goals in the Bundesliga, hitting four in FC Bayern München's emphatic 8-1 success at FC St Pauli to leapfrog Edinson Cavani into fourth place. Antonio Di Natale's first-half double for Udinese Calcio against S. S. Lazio moved him one shy of last year's tally and earned him outright third spot in the standings. The rest of the top ten remain unchanged after a relatively dry weekend for Europe's hottest guns.
ESM Golden Shoe standings: 9 May1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid CF) 33 x 2 = 66
2. Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona) 31 x 2 = 62

Rules
Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.
A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.
